The incident occurred while she was crossing Ocean Avenue at Avenue O. The ambulance driver did not stop after the collision, and authorities believe they may not have realized they hit someone. Sobel was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where she later died from severe trauma. The hospital has suspended the ambulance crew pending an investigation, and no charges have been filed yet.
