France: Thousands join Paris suburb mayor to protest racism
"We come to state firmly and definitively our visceral attachment to the values of the republic embodied by those who are heirs of immigration, condemning what he said were failing, sometimes even complicit institutions."
"A sickening wave of racism coming from the political and media elites who, without reservation, without restraint, have displayed their contempt for a part of our people."
Saint-Denis hosted a rally with around 20,000 attendees in support of Bally Bagayoko, the newly elected Black mayor. Bagayoko faced immediate racist attacks and misinformation. He emphasized the importance of republican values and criticized institutions for their complicity. The protest included trade unions, civil associations, and music bands, with LFI leader Jean-Luc Melenchon denouncing racism from political and media elites. Investigations into racist comments made on CNews and social media are underway, following Bagayoko's complaint against the network.
