This beloved east London museum will reopen after years of closure
"The museum, which displays Walthamstow's colourful cultural history - not to mention Britain's first ever petrol-fuelled car - closed for renovation in December 2023."
"Soon the facelift will be complete - and the revamped house has various new bells and whistles. Of these are five new exhibition rooms, which will host various never-before-seen displays."
"The building has a rich, crazy history. After starting as a parish workhouse in 1730, it then became an armoury, someone's house, and a police station, before opening as a museum in 1931."
Vestry House museum in Walthamstow will reopen in autumn 2026 after a renovation funded by £4.5 million from the government. The museum will feature five new exhibition rooms showcasing Walthamstow's cultural history, including its contributions to theatre, music, cinema, and sport, as well as its ties to the transatlantic slave trade. A police cell from its time as a jail will also be on display. New amenities include a cafe and creative workspaces, with plans for school visits and community engagement.
