CM Won, education advocates rally against relocation of migrant families from LIC shelter - QNS
""These children have been in our school for over a year, and these children have been a part of our community. Their parents have been our neighbors, and we want them to stay," Won said at Friday's rally."
""You should not be closing down any shelters anywhere. There is no reason for us to continue this concentration and saturation of shelters only in black and brown low-income neighborhoods," Won said."
Council Member Julie Won and education advocates rallied against converting a family shelter into a site for single men, fearing the displacement of around 80 families. The Department of Social Services plans to relocate families from the Royal Stay Hotel to accommodate single men. Concerns were raised about children being separated from friends and the impact on their education. Won criticized the city for concentrating shelters in low-income neighborhoods, particularly affecting black and brown communities, and called for equal distribution of shelters across the city.
