Expanded café terraces in Paris were introduced as a temporary measure during the Covid pandemic to promote outdoor dining. Due to their popularity, the city made them a permanent feature, known as terrasses estivales, operating from April 1st to October 31st. The initiative aligns with efforts to pedestrianize streets and reclaim public space. Businesses must now apply for licenses, with costs starting at €1,000. Despite formalities, many establishments embraced the opportunity, with over 2,000 venues applying for licenses in 2022.
