These rock-climbing fish can shimmy up a 50-foot waterfall
""If you would ask a regular person, do you think fish can climb falls, most of them will tell you: you are crazy. Well, it exists, it is out there.""
""It really reinforced to me just how cool fish are, right? The scale is really impressive. That would be like a salmon trying to make it over Niagara Falls or climb the CN Tower.""
""I try to go close to the falls and observe very clearly what fishes can do.""
""The behavior has been documented in fish in other parts of the world, but never in Africa.""
Auguste Chocha Manda observed shellear fish climbing a 50-foot rockface at Luvilombo waterfall in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This behavior, previously documented in other regions, had not been seen in Africa. After losing his footage, Pacifique Kiwele Mutambala, a PhD student, sought to gather evidence. In a new study, Mutambala and colleagues detailed their observations of the shellear's climbing abilities, highlighting the unique traits that enable this remarkable behavior. The scale of their climbing is likened to a salmon attempting to ascend Niagara Falls.
