Brett Baty is being utilized as a super utility player, showcasing versatility across multiple positions for the New York Mets.
There are just some things that you never see in practice until you go out there and do it in a game. I was talking to [bench coach] Kai [Correa] and Mendy [Carlos Mendoza] about some of the plays out there [where] I felt I wanted to go get the ball. That's just how I've always been. At third base, you go get the ball - every ball that you can go get.
It doesn't appear there's any concern with Baty missing the start of the season. There's still over a month until Opening Day, so there's lots of time for Baty to get enough reps before the start of the schedule. Baty had a bit of a breakout in 2025, hitting 18 home runs and slashing .254/.313/.435 for a 111 wRC+. He also seemed to establish himself as a viable defender at both third and second base.
"We're looking at a guy that pretty much established himself in the everyday lineup -- whether it was at third base, second base," Baty said. "And then what he was able to provide for us offensively, defensively. It's a big blow. But we got other guys that are going to get opportunities and they're going to have to step up."
