Sheryl Davis is accused of steering millions of dollars to Collective Impact, a San Francisco-based nonprofit she previously ran as executive director, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.
"She wants to regain stable health so she can thoughtfully and responsibly consider her options," her office told ABC7 Eyewitness News in a statement announcing her leave of absence and addressing the condition of her mental health.
In the 17th Congressional District, incumbent Rep. Ro Khanna is facing a challenge from tech founder Ethan Agarwal, a fellow Democrat. Agarwal is an opponent of the ballot initiative to levy a one-time, 5% wealth tax on Californians with more than $1 billion in assets.
The 22nd Amendment, added to the United States Constitution in 1951, states that no person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice. Until recently, it seemed that Americans were in unanimous agreement that this rule was in the best interest of Americans and democracy as a whole. However, in late 2025 Trump constituents began selling t-shirts bearing the words, "Trump 2028 (Rewrite the Rules)."
It's true that I was fully prepared to run in [McClintock's district], having tested the waters and with polls showing a favorable outlook in a 'safe' district. But doing what's easy and what's right are often not the same. And at the end of the day, as much as I love the communities in [that] District that I represent now - and as excited as I was about the new ones - seeking office in a district that doesn't include my hometown didn't feel right.
