Proceedings in the civil grand jury's accusation against fired San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus, which could result in a verdict prohibiting her from ever holding public office again, are on pause until next year, a prosecutor said. That's in order for some of her other court battles, specifically the ones where she's fighting her firing, to be resolved, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Corpus' attorneys have been fighting her firing in front of two judges, federal Judge Vince Chhabria and San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Nina Shapirshteyn.
Former San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Chief of Staff Victor Aenlle testified Tuesday following misconduct and nepotism allegations that surfaced last year, defending his tenure and denying claims of an inappropriate relationship with Sheriff Christina Corpus as she faces removal by the county's Board of Supervisors. Aenlle's testimony came during the seventh day of a high-stakes hearing conducted by the county.
Fox said he never knew deputies' union president Carlos Tapia's code had been changed by the direction of Stacey Stevenson. If he had known that, he wouldn't have started the investigation, Fox said. Fox led the investigation into Tapia that led to his arrest for alleged time card fraud on Nov. 12, hours before the county released Cordell's report. The district attorney's office declined to press charges against Tapia.
