Free open source software is fundamentally broken. In 2023, Denis Pushkarev, maintainer of the widely used core-js library, vented his frustration with the fact that users of his software seldom offer financial support, highlighting the disconnect between widespread dependency on open source and inadequate financial compensation for developers maintaining critical infrastructure.

Your coding apprentice can build, at your direction, pretty much anything now. The task becomes more like conducting an orchestra than playing in it. Not all members of the orchestra want to conduct, but given that is where things are headed, I think we all need to consider it at least.

subprocess module relies on busy-loop polling to determine whether a process has completed yet. Modern operating systems have callback mechanisms to do this, and Python 3.15 will now take advantage of these.

Flickr, SmugMug, and others all have chunks of our memories sitting on their servers. Some of these services we haven't touched in years, others we pay for but rarely use. It was time to bring everything home.
