Many collectors are looking to diversify their collections or discover emerging categories before they reach the level of demand we're seeing with Pokémon. While rare Pokémon cards are selling for millions in some instances, its competitors are catching on as collectors look for their next up-and-coming investment.

The Pokémon Company has released a ton of new merch for the series' 30th anniversary in Japan, including a retro Pikachu plush that was so popular overseas that its stores were ransacked by fans and scalpers alike last week.

Humans have disappeared and their Pokémon have been left behind, trying to make the remains of the old civilization into one that they can live in and sustain by themselves. Throughout this process, these Pokémon talk about how much they miss their human partners, and the information we can glean from the notes and letters we find lying around is that a climate crisis forced them to evacuate the planet and leave the Pokémon in a massive PC server for their safety.

For many of us at GameSpot, the Pokemon series has been a fundamental part of our gaming history. More so than most game series, which are often less frequent with new releases, the Pokemon series has remained a constant in our lives--forever evolving alongside us and acting as a sort of companion through all the various stages of our lives.

Nintendo has a history of fleshing out the larger Pokémon world through spinoffs. What games from the Pokémon Snap and Detective Pikachu series lacked in terms of action, they made up for in the way they made pokémon feel like creatures with rich lives outside of their relationships with trainers.

I don't remember when was the last day I did not think about Pokémon at all. In the 30 years since Pokémon debuted in Japan with the 1996 release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green for Nintendo Game Boy, the franchise has taken over the globe with its animated shows, mobile games and highly coveted trading cards.

Starting off the trailer is a cinematic showing several illustrations of a Pikachu traveling around the world. Each drawing shows Pikachu in a different region from the first nine generations, from Kanto to Paldea. It's a cute way to lead into the next generation and also pay homage to the series' 30th anniversary.

The Pokémon Company finally, in the dead of night, announced its annual Pokémon Day Presents showcase. This is the stream the company hosts every year on February 27 to celebrate the franchise's anniversary. is turning 30 in 2026, so there's probably a lot to share ahead of the coming year.
