The first three months of 2026 were among the three safest first-three-month periods since records started being kept at the dawn of the Automobile Age, with only 42 fatalities from car crashes in New York City.
Scott Quigley was indicted on a charge of negligent motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence, following a crash that resulted in the death of Angelo Schettino, a 37-year-old man with developmental disabilities.
A motorcyclist died Thursday after colliding with a sedan in what police said was a DUI-related wreck involving another driver. The crash happened about 4:45 p.m. in the area of Buchanan Road and Woodborough Place. Officers arrived to find the 46-year-old Concord resident down. He died despite rescue efforts by police and medical personnel.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the motive is believed to be a dispute between the suspect and the victim over a mutual female acquaintance. Detectives are continuing this investigation to gain more insight, as well as to collect and analyze evidence.
A vehicle operated by the FDNY was traveling on Avenue S when it was struck by a van heading north on West 11th Street in the Gravesend section of the borough. As a result, the FDNY truck then collided with an Access-A-Ride van, which ended up hitting a Lexus SUV, according to the NYPD.

A 66-year-old man died on Sunday after getting hit by an SUV driver on Staten Island a week earlier, the NYPD announced on Wednesday. Cops say they responded to a 911 call of the man whom they identified as Staten Island resident Jean Victorin getting struck on South Avenue near Forest Avenue within the NYPD's 121st Precinct at 1:54 p.m. on Jan. 4.
