Jose Quintana is on the 15-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain, with Valente Bellozo recalled as a replacement.
A torn lat muscle last March ended up costing Zack Thompson the entirety of his 2025 season, though the Cardinals left-hander was also dealing with another injury. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Thompson had an arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder in August, described as "a cleanup procedure." The recovery from this surgery has delayed Thompson's mound work at the start of Spring Training, though he is playing catch and planning to ramp up his throwing.
In need of left-handed reinforcements for their bullpen, the New York Mets acquired Bryan Hudson from the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations on Tuesday. The 28-year-old southpaw owns a 2.83 ERA over three seasons with the Dodgers, Brewers, and White Sox, though the bulk of that solid stat line comes from the 2024 campaign with Milwaukee. In 43 appearances (61.2 innings) that season, Hudson posted a 1.73 ERA with 62 strikeouts. He posted a 4.80 ERA in 16 games last season.
Infielder/outfielder Josh Smith has been placed on the paternity list. Right-handers Chris Martin and Cole Winn have each been placed on the 15-day injured list. Right-handers Luis Curvelo and Jose Corniell have been recalled to take two of those spots. Infielder Donovan Solano has had his contract selected to take the third. To open a 40-man spot for Solano, right-hander Nathan Eovaldi has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Sasaki, 23, is 1-1 with a 4.72 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 34⅓ innings over eight big league appearances this season, all starts. He's also spent time at Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he was 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA over seven appearances, including five starts. The defending World Series champion Dodgers are searching for bullpen help as the postseason approaches.
It's an abrupt end to Manoah's time in Toronto. The Jays selected the big right-hander with the 11th overall pick in the 2019 draft. The West Virginia product reached the big leagues two seasons later. He fired 20 starts with a 3.22 earned run average to finish eighth in AL Rookie of the Year balloting in 2021. Manoah built off that promising debut with a fantastic first full season in the big leagues.
He is expected to undergo imaging to reveal the full extent of the issue, but manager Carlos Mendoza did admit that this is concerning, especially because the right-hander just recently returned from a two-week IL stint for inflammation in that same elbow. He continued to have a hard time recovering after every time he pitched, Mendoza said. [Wednesday] night, we got him hot, and as he was getting loose in the bullpen, we shut him down.
Smith landed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain prior to Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving San Francisco without its best defensive first baseman for at least the next week-and-a-half. With 15 games remaining, Smith may not have enough time to rehab the injury and return for the end of the regular season. In a corresponding move, infielder/outfielder Jerar Encarnacion was reinstated from the 10-day injured list after he dealt with his own right hamstring strain.
The Cubs may be looking at going into the postseason without their closer. Daniel Palencia entered the ninth inning of Chicago's game against the Nationals earlier today, but surrendered five runs and was pulled without recording an out. The team termed Palencia's ailment "shoulder tightness" at the time of his removal, but manager Craig Counsell told reporters (including Bruce Levine of 670 The Score) following the game that, more specifically, Palencia was suffering from a posterior capsule strain in his right shoulder.
Phillies shortstop Trea Turner made an early departure during the seventh inning of today's game with the Marlins due to what the Phils announced as a right hamstring strain. A throwing error from Miami shortstop allowed Turner to reach base, but Turner immediately left the field and headed into the Phils' dugout, and was replaced by pinch-runner Edmundo Sosa.
At the earliest, Finnegan could return Sept. 16 for the Tigers' opener of a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park, but the 34-year-old might need more than the minimum stay on the injured list. "It's mild, which is a good sign," manager A.J. Hinch said before Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park. "The only way to strengthen and rehab this is to have a little period of shutting down games.
Adolis García is out of the Rangers' lineup today in Arizona. He pulled up while beating out a force play in the ninth inning of last night's contest. He gingerly came around to score on Jake Burger's RBI triple but was lifted for defensive replacement Alejandro Osuna in the next half-inning. Manager Bruce Bochy revealed this evening that García has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 right quad strain (via the MLB.com injury tracker).
Twins starter David Festa is done for the season after suffering a setback while working back from a shoulder injury, relays Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star-Tribune. Festa is headed for a consultation with noted orthopedist Dr. Keith Meister. The 25-year-old Festa has been out since the middle of July. Minnesota sent him to Triple-A St. Paul for a rehab start on August 28. Festa struck out five over 2 2/3 scoreless innings. It seems he came out of the appearance with renewed shoulder pain. That'll shut him down for the year. The Twins will hope there's nothing structurally amiss that'll impact his availability for 2026.
Perhaps the Yankees' biggest September call-up of them all is coming in the form of relief pitcher Ryan Yarbrough's activation off the injured list. The Bronx Bombers have the veteran lefty back in their ranks, making the move during their off-day on Monday ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Astros down in Houston. The 33-year-old has been down since mid-June after suffering an oblique strain.
