Canada invests $175 million in a rare earth mine to secure jobs amid a strained Canada-U.S. relationship.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is poised to award a crucial contract to Italian defence company Leonardo, securing the future of Britain's last military helicopter manufacturing site and safeguarding 3,000 jobs. A Treasury source confirmed on Friday that the deal will prevent the closure of Leonardo's Yeovil facility in southwest England, which the firm had threatened without a new agreement.
Leonardo owns Britain's last military helicopter manufacturing site, employing 3,000 workers, and was the only bidder for the contract. It is understood that the chancellor and prime minister chose to intervene to ensure the project would go ahead, in part to protect UK jobs.
The company, which employs 78 people, continues to trade during the examinership process. East Coast Bakehouse said it intends to protect jobs and customer relationships. Examinership protects a business from its creditors for a limited period while it tries to put in place a rescue plan. "This has been a difficult decision, but we believe examinership offers the most constructive route to securing the future of the business," said Mr Carey.
