The lawsuit was filed by Deshanae L. Brown, who alleges she was subjected to discrimination based on her race, sex, and disability, citing violations of federal and state laws including Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Judge Brian Murphy of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued an order to stay Secretary Kennedy's appointments to the ACIP committee, stating the appointments were likely made in violation of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), which prohibits the appointment of special interest advocates to government advisory panels.

The Younger abstention doctrine provides that federal courts are not to interfere with pending state criminal proceedings. If the judge applies it here, the federal case could effectively stall while the state case proceeds.

On Friday a federal judge dropped two of the four charges against Luigi Mangione the man accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson making his case no longer eligible for the death penalty. Mangione is accused of killing Thompson on Dec. 4, 2024 on a street in midtown Manhattan as he was walking to his hotel for UnitedHealth Group's annual investor conference.
