A California Division of Occupational Safety and Health investigation into the July 18 blast resulted in eight citations and more than $350,000 in fines, according to records from the state agency reviewed by The Times.
The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office must comply with subpoenas issued by the county's civilian oversight board as part of a whistleblower investigation into alleged misconduct, a state appeals court ruled Thursday.
U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson issued a one-page ruling Friday throwing out charges against Joshua Jaynes and Kyle Meany, two former officers involved in crafting the Taylor warrant.
On January 18, a photograph of a pair of safety goggles in a hardware store floated across my Instagram timeline. "#JOURNALISTS covering #iceprotest in #Minneapolis: Less lethal projectiles move 400-600 feet per second. Z87.1 glasses no longer provide the protection required," read the caption. The post came from Crisis Ready Media and was shared by the National Press Photographers' Association (NPPA).
According to a statement later released by Columbia, the agents had gained access to the building by posing as police in search of a 5-year-old - going so far as to present a flyer of the "missing child" to a campus safety officer. The ruse allowed them to make their way to the apartment of Ellie Aghayeva, an international student from Azerbaijan who immigration officials claim overstayed her visa.
Many U.S. police departments, including the LAPD, discourage officers from shooting at moving vehicles due to the high risk of stray gunfire. Recent ICE shootings in Portland and Minneapolis have reignited debate over when deadly force against motorists is justified or necessary. Since January 2015, LAPD officers have fired their weapons at least 36 times at vehicles, killing seven motorists or passengers and wounding 12 others.
Agreements allowing local police forces to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have multiplied at an unprecedented rate. An analysis of official data by FWD.us, a nonpartisan organization that advocates for comprehensive immigration and criminal justice reform, shows that 1,168 police departments had officers enrolled to assist ICE at the end of January, up from 135 during the Biden administration and 150 at the end of Donald Trump's first term.
Last year, Trump officials pledged to double staffing at ICE by adding 10,000 new deportation officers by January 2026. Stephen Miller treated the recruitment drive as a priority on par with the deportation push, demanding daily updates on the pace of hiring. Immigration and Customs Enforcement held job expos in multiple cities and dangled $50,000 bonuses, student-loan forgiveness, and other perks before potential recruits.
The ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Good in her car last week in Minneapolis experienced internal bleeding as a result of the encounter, officials claim. Jonathan Ross suffered internal bleeding in the torso and was treated by a doctor following the shooting, CBS News reported, citing two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition. In video shot by an eyewitness, Ross and other ICE agents were seen approaching Good's red Honda Pilot as she blocked a road during an ICE operation.
