Super League's potential NRL takeover is gaining momentum as executives prepare for negotiations.
The ongoing discussions regarding future structural changes to the game, such as the introduction of new tournaments (eg. Fifa Club World Cup), further intensify this challenge. These changes have the potential to significantly reduce the downtime available to elite players, affecting their recovery and overall well-being.
The 'Home Team Act' would require that any sports team owner looking to move their franchise, or sell to a new owner with the intention of relocation, first be required to offer the sale of the franchise to a group keeping it in its current location.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been clear: 'We are convinced that for the good of European basketball, the best course of action would be a joint solution with the Euroleague, reaching an agreement on a systemic approach to growth.'
MLB is the only one of the four major American sports without a minimum and maximum limit to spending, and some owners may be looking to change that. According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the early projections from the league suggest a salary cap of around $260-280 million, along with a salary floor of around $140-160 million.
The possible implementation of a salary cap is one of the biggest issues dividing Major League Baseball and the Players Association (MLBPA) as collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations are set to begin in the spring. The league believes a salary cap is necessary to improve competitive balance, while the players remain strongly against one, as it would limit their potential earnings. As it currently stands, MLB is the only major North American professional sports league without a salary cap.
Many in the industry expect a lockout and some even worry about the potential for lost games in 2027. Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of The New York Post report that the league has put aside a war chest of about $2 billion, roughly $75MM per team, from a central fund to help weather a potentially lengthy stoppage. The MLBPA has made similar preparations but the report doesn't provide specifics for that side.
Between now and then, the league needs to hold a two-team expansion draft for the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo, more than 100 unrestricted free agents need to sign contracts, and the 2026 rookies need to be drafted to their teams. Most importantly, the league and players need to agree on a collective bargaining agreement -- a process 15 months in the making.
The World Baseball Classic, gearing up for its sixth iteration, is still trying to find its footing as a true, best-on-best international tournament. It wants to be the FIFA World Cup, but everything wants to be the World Cup and nothing is besides the World Cup. It would probably settle, right now, for being the Four Nations Face-Off: a respectable simulacrum of a tournament that makes a lot of money for its organizers and stumbles into some excellent late-stage games.
Most Strasbourg fans thought they had it good from the deal which tied them together with Chelsea. After all, the BlueCo investment has given the French side a team competitive in Ligue 1 and finished top of the Uefa Conference League table last month. There has been a 157m revamp of their Stade de la Meinau home, improving facilities and increasing capacity.
