NATO is the most successful military alliance in history. It has underpinned the security of the United States for more than 70 years. The only time NATO has gone to war has been in response to an attack on America.
A 2023 bill co-sponsored by then-Senator Rubio and Sen. Tim Kaine made it unlawful for the commander in chief to leave NATO without Congressional approval. Rubio stated, 'No U.S. President should be able to withdraw from NATO without Senate approval.'
Healey claimed that the UK had 17 frigates and destroyers; however, the actual number is 13, comprising six Type 45 destroyers and seven Type 23 frigates.
NATO countries' restrained response to hybrid attacks is at odds with public opinion, new polling shows: Broad swaths of the public in key allied countries say actions such as cyberattacks on hospitals should be considered acts of war. The POLITICO Poll, conducted in the United States, Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, showed a majority of people agreed that a cyberattack that shuts down hospitals or power grids constitutes an act of war. Canadians felt the strongest about the issue, with 73 percent agreeing.
NATO is deploying a Turkish drone carrier to the Baltic Sea to boost its surveillance and defense in response to "repeated" Russian airspace violations, the alliance announced on Friday. The TCG Anadolu will support Eastern Sentry, a defensive operation the alliance launched in September after Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace, forcing a military response. The Turkish drone carrier is deploying toward the coast of Latvia, where it will contribute to air surveillance and defense along NATO's eastern edge.
"European NATO members are under pressure from the United States to build up their defence spending. Though they pledged last June to raise their defence and security-related outlays to five percent of GDP by 2035, Wadephul said progress in Europe so far had been lacking. "Unfortunately, efforts in the French Republic have also been insufficient to achieve this so far," Wadephul said. "France, too, needs to do what we are doing here with difficult discussions."
We're not leaving NATO. We're not leaving.... We may move a couple thousand troops from one country to another, but this has always been the case," Rubio said, playing down speculation that redeployments signal a broader shift.
The United States' top diplomat Marco Rubio traveled to Eastern Europe on Sunday for talks with the conservative leaders of Hungary and Slovakia, both of whom are aligned with US President Donald Trump. The visit comes a day after Rubio, who is also Trump's national security advisor, urged Europeans to defend Western civilization in a speech at the Munich Security Conference.
Sir Keir Starmer has been blasted for making "cheap political smears" against the Green Party, claiming that if they took power, the "lamps would go out across Europe once again." Green Party leader Zack Polanski hit back, accusing Starmer of "fear-mongering while ignoring the real problems" facing Brits. "Wages are stuck, rents are soaring, bills are through the roof - and Starmer is obsessed with scaring people about the lights going out," Polanski said. "People want solutions, not cheap political attacks."
