Jakob Poeltl's performance and injury history have raised concerns about his contract value for the Toronto Raptors.
Monday delivered one of the strangest nights of the NBA season, highlighted by historic upsets and a major trade ripple. Entering the day, 14-point underdogs were 1-26 this season. On Monday, they went 2-0, as the Charlotte Hornets (+15.5) stunned the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Denver Nuggets (+14.5) upset the Philadelphia 76ers. It marked just the fourth day in the last 35 seasons in which multiple 14-point underdogs won.
With at least 41 games in the books for every NBA team, let's take stock of what we've learned from the first half of a 2025-26 campaign already full of surprise contenders, historic performances and plenty of twists and turns. ( And one trade!) A pair of young teams -- the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the resurgent Detroit Pistons -- raced out to massive leads in both conferences.
The Golden State Warriors are now at the center of that shift. Jimmy Butler III' s season-ending torn ACL comes just as Golden State had found momentum, winning 12 of its last 16 games and posting its best on-court plus-minus with Butler as the connective piece. His absence removes more than just scoring, stripping the team of structure, late-game decision-making and defensive stability.
PHILADELPHIA -- Not only did the 76ers find their way to a dramatic 128-122 victory over the Houston Rockets here at Xfinity Mobile Arena Thursday night, but on the two-year anniversary of Joel Embiid scoring 70 points here against the San Antonio Spurs, the superstar center put up a 32-point triple-double.
During their current five-game win streak, which was extended on Sunday night with a 112-100 win over the Los Angeles Lakers at Madison Square Garden, they rank No. 1 in the NBA in defensive efficiency, No. 2 in opponent three-point percentage, No. 5 in turnovers forced, and No. 6 in opponent field-goal percentage. It is a significant turnaround from the unit that ranked 29th in opponent three-point percentage and 26th in defensive efficiency during an 11-game stretch in January, when they went 2-9.
The Raptors magnetic rookie, Collin Murray-Boyles - nicknamed Magneto for his ability to attract the ball defensively for steals and deflections, the latter of which he is in the 99th percentile in frequency of creating - featured heavily in all of what went well for his squad. A connective piece and playmaker. A touchstone that the ball could pick up energy from before moving on to a shooter or a dunker.
