San Leandro officers forcibly transported a homeless man to Oakland and 'dumped' him, prompting outrage from civil rights groups.
The fire burned portions of the Camron-Stanford House, a three-story Victorian on the southern end of the lake. Firefighters were able to save the home, but preservationists have questions about how the fire started.

Oakland leaders have declined for the second time to reappoint two incumbents to the Police Commission, the civilian body overseeing the Oakland Police Department. At the City Council meeting Tuesday night, all but two council members - Carroll Fife and Noel Gallo - voted to reject the nominees submitted by the Police Commission Selection Panel in December: Ricardo Garcia-Acosta, chair of the commission, and Omar Farmer, an alternate commissioner. The commissioners' terms expired in October, but both have continued to serve in a holdover capacity.
An independent investigation found that San Leandro Councilmembers Victor Aguilar Jr. and Fred Simon retaliated against Councilmember Xouhoa Bowen and engaged in gender-biased and abusive conduct following her vote to censure them in November 2024. This finding should concern every San Leandro resident. Disagreements are inevitable in public service, but retaliation, harassment and gender-based abuse are wholly unacceptable - especially from elected officials entrusted with serving the public.

While this may appear as a simple administrative shift, it is a strategic error that will undermine Oakland's transit, safety, and economic goals. Please initiate review with Council through issuing a Statement of Purpose for their review, and delay these changes until approved by Council.
