The gallery's inaugural presentation marked the first time Australian First Nations art had been presented at TEFAF Maastricht, and with sales totaling nearly $1.4 million, further underscored the growing relevance and interest in the category. Building on the momentum of the 2025 presentation, D Lan Galleries will now focus on works dating from the 1970s through today by artists whose practices have shaped the evolution of Australian Indigenous art.
The redevelopment prompted Simon and Catriona Mordant, leading Australian arts philanthropists, to make a record gift of 25 works from their private collection, and the gallery will present these to the public in a special exhibition to open in May. The building expansion makes Newcastle Art Gallery the largest public art institution in New South Wales outside Sydney.
"I've had my fair share of beach vacations, but I'm telling you, there's no place like Margaret River," Hardy, the vice president of Friends of the Cape to Cape Track, shares in his tour of his home region. Candidly, most people visiting the British Museum's Hawaii exhibition probably walk in with a lot of stereotypical preconceptions about the island nation. And will walk out with a totally different understanding of it. Understandably, we probably think of it as not much more than the Pacific island nation that's part of the USA, home to Pearl Harbour and the long-running TV show Hawaii 5.0.
It might be only 40 minutes by ferry from Brisbane, but when North Stradbroke Island, or Minjerribah, comes into focus - a soft line of bush, dunes and open water - and you roll off the barge, the city skyline feels like a sci-fi memory. It's no wonder that the locals and in-the-know Brisbanites guard this island with a conspiratorial hush.
OREGON CITY - It'll be a long and arduous journey emblematic of the original 1840s Oregon Trail migration itself. But, in the end, some years from now, restoration of the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive and Visitor Center in Oregon City should produce a beacon of history, education, and pride for the state and citizens of all backgrounds. An updated venue will include a new addition housing original wagons, a beautiful plank house, amphitheater events, and expanded programming.
The accompanying catalogue for Hawai' i: a Kingdom Crossing Oceans features more than 150 works, from ancient Hawaiian treasures to important contemporary pieces, telling "a compelling story of movement, allyship and cultural exchange [between the UK and Hawaii]". An inventory of the entire collection of Native Hawaiian works housed at the British Museum, the largest collection outside of Hawaii, is included in the catalogue.
Last February, master of ceremonies Dennis Bowen (a Seneca elder) welcomed the reigning champion into the 2025 World Championship Hoop Dance Contest arena at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Thousands of spectators joined them to watch more than 100 dancers compete across the two-day event. Bowen announced Josiah Enriquez's (Pueblo of Pojoaque, Navajo, Isleta) accomplishments as a top place finisher several years running in the teen division and as the surprise winner in an unprecedented tiebreaking round in the adult division the year before.

Archaeologists have discovered what they believe is the world's oldest known rock art, in a cave off the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The hand stencil has been dated to at least 67,800 years ago, making it 1,100 years older than the earliest example of rock art that was known about before this, produced in Spain by Neanderthals. The Sulawesi work may, its finders say, provide insights into the migration of early humans to Australia.
London's Mosaic Rooms is reopening on 18 February after a year-long refurbishment, with new facilities, a new charitable status and a new director. But the organisation's focus, says its director Pip Day, remains the same: art and culture from the Arab world and beyond. Since the Mosaic Rooms launched in 2008 it has been a consistent platform in the UK for major artists from the Arab region, such as Heba Y. Amin, Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti, and Mohammed Omar Khalil.
