"We're telling young girls, 'Get a job, advance your career, your career is the most important thing that you have in your life.' And I think it's a false promise, man. I think it's a false promise; it doesn't give you happiness."
This is hardly the first season in which the wealthy have made themselves more and more powerful in collusion with the powerful, making themselves more and more wealthy all at the expense of political equality and economic opportunity. Today we use words like unprecedented, but the truth is our times are more precedent than we would care to admit.
A mathematician by training, he earned a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later taught at the University of Chicago before entering public office. He served in the Illinois House and Senate from 2011 to 2019, where he built a reputation as a policy-driven progressive focused on campaign finance reform, voting access, and structural changes to government.
A lot of people, when they have a job, they use that job to run for a different office. And I think Mayor Pete, uh, Secretary Buttigieg, was running for president while he was the secretary of DOT and didn't pay attention to the basics.
This group of people here this morning is the best reminder of what's at stake. We are in a crisis for working people in this country. I would say that the transition from Jan Schakowsky to me is one of generational change, for sure. There's nobody else who's done both things that I think we need right now—fought and won inside of government, making real change, and fought and won out on the streets as an activist.
In perhaps a vain attempt to prove themselves moderate, the Democratic lawmakers helped override Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's vetoes. Voters responded with the kind of ballot-box fury that should serve as a lesson to other incumbents. It wasn't just a case that the incumbents lost. They were buried, with several of them getting trounced by margins of 40 points or more.
Rules that Buttigieg had been working to implement would have required airlines to pay each passenger several hundred dollars and up to $775, depending on the length of the delays. Presumably, these payouts would have motivated airlines to prevent delays by, perhaps, making sure pilots were booked in advance of all flights.
I think the reason a lot of real people watch the State of the Union is they want to know what it's going to mean to them, right? You get done with dinner, you put your kids to bed, and then you tune in to see if your president can tell you how he's going to make your life better, especially because this president has made your life worse, right?
When there aren't enough houses for everyone who wants to buy one, the price goes up as wealthier people bid up the cost of existing housing. Building more houses would drive down the prices of existing houses. That's good for people looking to enter the housing market, but many existing homeowners view their homes as investments, assets they believe should appreciate faster than inflation over time.
"We live in a world in which you can talk all you want about international niceties and everything else," Miller said. "But we live in a world, in the real world, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power." "These are the iron laws of the world that existed since the beginning of time."
"The President sent an unhinged message to Norway, like, 'take away the car keys' level of crazy," Buttigieg said in a video he released yesterday. "[Trump said] because the Norwegian government didn't give him the Nobel Peace Prize, the Danish government needs to give him Greenland, or else he will punish all of Europe. This isn't just crazy and embarrassing, it is dangerous."
Zoom in: Last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom stumbled when conservative influencer Ben Shapiro pressed him on the topic on Newsom's podcast. "The question that you're not wanting to answer ... is whether boys can become girls," Shapiro said. "Yeah, I just, well, I think, uh, for the grace of God," Newsom replied.
