Closing a store is not a decision we take lightly, but this store has had performance issues for an extended period of time. We have worked to enhance and remodel the location, but it has not shown the sales and profit needed to continue operations. In fact, despite the best efforts of a great team, we have lost money year over year at this location.
Walking through the main hall is like being at a grocery store on steroids. Big brands are out in force with elaborate displays, from Organic Valley's farmhouse-style installation featuring a photo moment with popular cartoon character Bluey to La Croix's tropical-themed display to promote its newest flavor debuting at Expo (that would be Pineapple Coconut, for bubbly water fans).
Where multi-story apartment buildings are now being constructed once stood the Butcher family orchard. The farm had been in the family since 1881, when Rolla and Emma Butcher bought 160 acres of land. After Rolla's early death, Emma ran the farm by herself, planting fruit trees while raising her young children.
A new ice cream spot is coming to the Excelsior at 4452 Mission St., right at the bustling intersection of Mission and Excelsior. This should be especially exciting news for students at Monroe Elementary School and San Francisco Community K-8 nearby, and even more so for visitors who stop by the Mission Science Workshop at 4458 Mission St., to say hi to the reptiles and guinea pigs.
Erewhon is a Los Angeles-based health-food chain that's a favorite of celebrities like Jake Gyllenhaal, Miley Cyrus, A$AP Rocky, and more. According to Erewhon's website, the store's founders Michio and Aveline Kushi opened the first location in Los Angeles in 1968 after they moved from Boston. They were inspired by the macrobiotic diet, which emphasizes whole grains, soy, and vegetables.
The tiny town of Duncans Mills is a tribute to kinship. Named after two brothers, a pair of 19th-century Scotsmen who sailed lumber down the Russian River for building homes in San Francisco, the unincorporated Sonoma County community is now run by three sisters. Their parents started rescuing buildings from dilapidation in the area in 1970 and ever since, the family has safeguarded the revival of the rustic yet boutique village by the river.
The recent announcement that the Peninsula Open Space Trust has purchased the final 2,284 acres of Sargent Ranch marks a historic turning point for Santa Clara County. This acquisition officially ends the decade-long threat of the Sargent Ranch Quarry, an industrial project that would have irreversibly damaged one of our region's most sensitive landscapes. This victory is not just a win for land conservation, but a monumental achievement for the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, which has long fought to protect Juristac, a sacred ceremonial site.
One person was killed and another was injured in a crash on the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge Tuesday afternoon, when a car stalled and was hit from behind by a large van. California Highway Patrol officers insist that alcohol and drugs were not a factor, and as of 6 pm Tuesday night, traffic on the bridge was moving again, though barely at a crawl.
Walk into a Ralphs supermarket in California or a King Soopers in Colorado, and you might get a feeling vaguely familiar to shopping at Kroger. The signs are different, the store layout isn't quite the same, and local products mingle with store-brand ones - but the shopping experience still has a Kroger-ish ambiance. There's a reason for that, and you might not like it. About 20 favorite "hometown" regional grocery brands across America are actually part of the same huge Kroger family.
On the aforementioned Reddit post, some Aldi employees say that curbside pickup should have just been used during pandemic times, citing that the program, due to its current inefficiencies, costs the stores money. How does a program as seemingly simple as driving up to the store to pick up your groceries become so complicated? It likely has ties to widespread understaffing in retail, less-than-ideal systems surrounding the process, as well as customer misunderstandings.
Retail media is evolving from clicks and carts to conversations and context. As generative and conversational AI reshape how people discover products across the answer ecosystem, retail media leaders are facing new challenges - and new opportunities. They sit at a rare intersection. They have first-party data, frequent customer relationships, and real-world transactions. The question isn't whether retail media will keep growing. It's how it evolves without losing performance, trust, or relevance.
Grocery stores that offer the best produce know it's crucial to nail a few key factors. First, produce needs to be fresh - that feeling when you get home and open a packet of cucumbers only to find that they're soggy and covered in slime is not a good one. Second, fruits and vegetables need to be priced right. While shoppers can expect to pay a premium of about 50 percent more for organically grown vegetables, anything more than that starts to feel unreasonable.
For going on five-and-a-half years now, I have traveled this country full-time in a short bus that my wife and I converted into our tiny home on wheels. Over those years of gallivanting through wild country I have worked as a recipe developer and food writer, penning two cookbooks for fellow campers and nomads sold under the title " The Buslife Kitchen."
