Jackson Jr. recognized the full scope and character of his father's mission as the country preacher who brought "a consistent prophetic voice" to struggles for economic and social and racial justice, and peace, over the course of more than six decades in the public eye.
He maintained a tense relationship with the political order, not because the presidents were White or Black, but the demands of our message, the demands of speaking for the least of these—those who are disinherited, the damned, the dispossessed, the disrespected—demanded not Democratic or Republican solutions, but demanded a consistent, prophetic voice that at no point in time sold us out as a people.
When the optimism of the early movement had begun to fade, and leadership had begun to fracture, and when the country seemed to have grown bored, gotten weary of the idea of justice and equality, and moved on to other concerns, Obama said, Reverend Jackson rose above despair, and kept that righteous flame alive.
Born in Brooklyn, his life followed a path that blended scholarship, service and spiritual calling. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Southern Connecticut State University. First, he felt drawn to ministry at the age of 19, according to his biography on the Brown Memorial Baptist Church website. That calling deepened his studies at Yale University, where he trained for the ministry and went on to graduate from divinity school in 1994.
Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. took a chance on me as a 19-year-old college student. At that age, as an intern in 2009, I should've been pouring coffee, maybe making copies. Instead, he put me to work on college affordability policy, youth violence prevention, and immigration reform at his Rainbow PUSH (People United to Serve Humanity) Coalition on the South Side of Chicago.
In an attached letter to the complaint, filed with the District Court Litigation Division, Johns details the extent of Bautista's injuries, saying he was "quickly unable to breathe because of the chemical agent and believed he would die from asphyxia," and he "experienced trouble breathing following the assault, and he continues to experience severe trauma from the memory of the assault and his fear that he would die."
King's intuition was that white people with lower incomes would support this type of policy because they could also benefit from it. In 1967, King argued, "It seems to me that the Civil Rights Movement must now begin to organize for the guaranteed annual income . . . which I believe will go a long, long way toward dealing with the Negro's economic problem and the economic problem with many other poor people confronting our nation."
