I was too embarrassed to sing in my apartment, he says on a video call. But my roommate at the time was dating the preacher's daughter, and had keys to the church across the street. Amos, backed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, began with a rousing debut performance of 'Stronger Together,' where you really feel that track's depth and resonance. From there, Amos busted out a classic track with 'Cornflake Girl' followed by covers of The Rolling Stones' 'Beast of Burden' and Bob Dylan's 'The Times They Are A-Changin.' As if the live debut wasn't already enough, Amos' covers were that perfect blend of poignant and stirring.

The Warfield opened on May 13, 1922, as Loew's Warfield - a " grand dame of a theatre" dedicated to film and vaudeville with a capacity of over 2,650 and a 33-foot-deep stage. The venue was the 300th theater commissioned by Marcus Loew and the 26th opened by his company within 18 months. The Warfield was built by local architect Gustave Albert Lansburgh; the early '20s were a boom time for Lansburgh, who simultaneously designed the neighboring Golden Gate Theatre (which also opened in 1922).

"When I read the fine print, it was 'an experience with REO Speedwagon's music.' It's none of the original members," Fletcher recalls. "I don't want to promote the show unless it's the real thing. I don't know why you would want to see that. It's just a cover band. To me, that's a little bit strange." He adds, with a sigh, "If there are no original members, who cares?"

There's plenty to enjoy in Amber Martin and Shannon Conley's production of The Carnaby Street Girls regardless of whether you're old enough to remember the British Invasion or just discovering that there was a whole lot of great music that came out of England in the '60s. Playing last weekend at The Cutting Room in Kips Bay, the two powerful singers had a great time, singing together and separately, with a repertoire of fab tunes that were hits for a number of swinging British gals.

Captain Sensible is a great fan of syrupy pop music and prog and glam rock. So his writing is very poppy, melodic and quite wonderful.
