From July 3 through 9, the Port of New York and New Jersey will host a weeklong spectacle featuring more than 60 international tall ships from more than 20 countries, more than 40 allied and U.S. naval vessels, a British aircraft carrier, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 and an aerial armada of over 100 aircrafts led by the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels. By the numbers alone, it's set to eclipse every Operation Sail celebration that came before it, from 1964 through 2012.

Dozens of well-wishers turned the S.S. Red Oak Victory, a floating World War II museum in Richmond's historic Kaiser Shipyard, into a party on Jan. 31, celebrating the 100 years of life lived by Jeanne Gibson and Marian Sousa. They popped bottles of sparkling wine, swapped stories and heaped the kind of praise that Gibson remarked is usually reserved for funerals onto the women, even with Sousa missing from the festivities as she recovered from a back injury.

Fisher marked the first time Moscone Center hosted something enormous like this; I went on the second night of a two-night takeover, December 20. Operationally, it ran surprisingly smoothly for a first-time venue. Crowd-wise: a lot of phones, a lot of jerseys, a lot of people filming drops they will absolutely never watch again. A fire broke out in a pier building on Pier 28 Tuesday morning, the second here in just over a year, leading to a subsequent traffic snarl in the area of Embarcadero and Bryant streets. The one-alarm fire on Pier 28, which produced smoke that billowed over the Bay, was reported by multiple 911 callers just before 10:30 am, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
