Waymo's self-driving cars struggled to stop for school buses, leading to dangerous incidents and a federal recall.
Waiting only a few seconds, and without accounting for Lens's whereabouts, Charles drove away and immediately ran over the child, causing his death. A kindergartener returning from school at Up Academy in Dorchester, Lens had just gotten off the school bus with his older cousin when he was struck and killed April 28.
Most people are surprised to learn that school buses have never been required to include driver airbags or seat belts. In passenger vehicles, these features have been standard for decades. Yet every weekday, more than 175,000 school bus drivers transport 25 million children, covering nearly 6 billion miles per year. Or, the distance to the moon and back over 12,500 times.
The Hingham Police Department issued a warning about self-driving cars after a Tesla was caught on video blowing past a school bus in the South Shore community. A video from Hingham police shows a red Tesla driving past a school bus with its stop sign out and flashing lights on. The incident occurred on Lincoln Street (Route 3A) around 2:48 p.m. on Oct. 6, according to dash cam footage.
