"They didn't even try to fly away. They just feebly made noise," a woman told the Santa Barbara Independent on Saturday after spotting over two dozen dead or dying cormorants near Goleta Beach. "A few were on their stomachs, wings spread [and] gasping for breath.... Heartbreaking."
"There are not very many conservation issues that I'm aware of where industry and conservationists and consumers and the fishermen and the resource users all want the same thing. Every stakeholder wants less bycatch."
"This is absolutely a rare window for young workers because the demand is real, funded, and seemingly long-term," Fraser Patterson, CEO of Skillit, stated. "These are not speculative jobs. They are tied to multi-decade investment cycles, and they offer a path to strong earnings, skill development, and stability without requiring a traditional four-year degree."
When the war broke out, we put a Warlike Operations Area Committee in place to address the protection of seafarers in the region. The organization has identified certain maritime routes in the region, including the Arabian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and some parts of the Gulf of Oman as high-risk areas, encouraging ship owners to allow seafarers to terminate contracts if they choose not to operate in those zones.
The vessels were transporting aid to the Caribbean's island nation, amid biting shortages triggered by a tightened US embargo. They were due to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday but failed to reach the island, prompting a search and rescue mission.
The haul of lobsters, Maine's best known export and a key piece of the state's identity and culture, has declined every year since 2021, and some scientists have cited as a reason warming oceans that spur migration to Canadian waters.
The Coast Guard said it received an alert about the overturned vessel shortly before noon. The Yankee Rose had two people onboard when it capsized roughly three nautical miles northeast of Race Point in Provincetown, the agency said.
We were always shackled [by Israel], Sehwail said quietly. But one period was less harsh than another. Even before October 2023, when Israel started its genocidal war on Gaza, the Palestinian enclave's fishermen operated under heavy restrictions imposed by Israel. Fishing zones were repeatedly reduced. Maritime boundaries outlined in agreements since the 1993 Oslo Accords were rarely implemented on the water.
Fifteen years ago, he searched for fish. Now he hunts plastic bottles. The fish fled from the plastic chokehold, said Sayed, who has lived on the Giza island since arriving from Assiut, further south on the Nile, as a 14-year-old fishing apprentice. Recovered CWMs continue to pose worker and food safety risks. Because of ocean drift, storms, and offshore industries, sea-disposed CWMs locations are largely unknown and potentially far from their originally documented dump site. The three incidents exposed at least six crew members to mustard agent, which causes blistering chemical burns on skin and mucous membranes.
The resolution, drawn up by 3rd District Supervisor Justin Cummings, states that deep-sea mining remains an unproven, speculative industry with no demonstrated record of safe commercial-scale operation, while existing coastal and ocean economies including fisheries, tourism, recreation, and cultural practices depend upon healthy marine ecosystems that could be jeopardized by seabed mining impacts.
On September 14, Alejandro Carranza, a 42-year-old fisherman, set out to sea from a remote town in La Guajira, Colombia's northernmost province, bordering Venezuela. It was an ordinary fishing trip, in search of tuna and marlin, said Leonardo Vega, a childhood friend and the president of the fishing association Carranza belonged to. But this time, Carranza never returned.
Consumers must be aware that seafood fraud, in which vendors label cheaper fish as products of higher quality and price, is common practice. According to Oceana, fish is mislabeled 25 to 70% of the time, especially when it comes to prized fish like wild salmon and Atlantic cod. Those of us who care about the environment are also concerned with traceability,

The men were on board the boat Novo Alborada which was approximately 30 miles southwest of Valentia. It is understood the men were injured when a rope snapped.
The government said the plans would increase the number of England's official bathing sites to 464. An official bathing spot on the Thames in London would mark a "vast transformation" in water quality in the river which was declared biologically dead in the 1950s due to pollution, officials said. Water minister Emma Hardy said rivers and beaches were "at the heart of so many communities, where people come together, families make memories and swimmers of all ages feel the benefits of being outdoors safely".
