Black and LGBTQ+ entertainers face significant challenges in America, with activism being crucial for visibility and representation.
Trans trailblazer Dylan Mulvaney is no stranger to being iconic, and her birthday gives us the perfect excuse to celebrate her. The stage star has gone from strength to strength after she first entered the scene with her now-infamous "Days of Girlhood" social media series documenting her transition. Today (29 December) marks the icon's 29th birthday, and in honour of her role as a trans activist, we've highlighted some of her best moments from this year. Her debut book Paper Doll: Notes from a Late Bloomer, which is a collection of journal entries from her first-year transition, was released on 11 March this year.
Miss Major Griffin-Gracy has died at the age of 78. She was a Black trans elder who has been fighting for the community for decades and was a veteran of the Stonewall Riots. She worked for the Mattachine Midwest gay rights' organization, started Miss Major's Angels of Care to take care of gay men dying of AIDS in the 1980s, was the executive director of the Transgender Gender-Variant and Intersex Justice Project, and built a safe haven for trans people called tilfi.
The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival showcases over half a dozen LGBTQ-themed films, including a comedy about Bar Mitzvahs and documentaries on trans activism and queer art.
The evening began with group meditation and collective screaming, providing an outlet for shared rage against injustices faced by the queer community.
