While dozens of other countries have delivered fast, modern train networks, we are stuck with a skeletal system built largely on slow, 19th-century alignments. Even developing nations are passing us by. There is growing recognition at the federal level that things need to change, but substantial and comprehensive reform would require an act of Congress.
The main focus of the project is replacing the existing timber decking on the walkway, which has reached the end of its useful life. It will be replaced with glass-reinforced plastic panels, a more durable material designed to withstand heavy passenger use and last for many years.
Ray contracted polio as a child while living in Oakland, a disease that had no preventative vaccine nor definitive cure at the time. Due in large part to the tenacity of his parents following treatments prescribed by specialists, Ray survived this mostly debilitating and deadly disease. While confined to his bed, Ray waved to the engineers on the trains that passed by outside his window every day.
What power does the council have? The council is purely advisory in nature and has no decision-making powers. It "does not exercise program management responsibilities and makes no decisions directly affecting the programs on which it provides advice," the charter reads. "The Secretary of Transportation may accept or reject a recommendation made by the Council and is not bound to pursue any of its recommendations."
The national rail bridge that spans Balham High Road, next to Balham station, has been given a deep clean and a new lighting scheme to improve its appearance. The bridge is the latest to benefit from Wandsworth Council's £2m schedule of improvements to rail bridges and underpasses, which is being funded by its contributions from local property developers.
Local studio Commoncraft has used a cantilevered volume to curve 545 Metropolitan over its neighbours, navigating the narrow Brooklyn site in order to provide more floor space. Located on Williamsburg's busy Metropolitan Avenue just across from the Lorimer L subway station, 545 Metropolitan is a six-storey mixed-use building that contains apartments, ground-level commercial space and terraces on its backside and roof. The building is wrapped in a black stucco finish, which contains a mica chip to give it a subtle glimmer, and features rows of slim rectangular windows on its front side, punctuated by a single "inverted arch" window.
A bridge failure might sound like something from a blockbuster, but real damage usually creeps in slowly. Across the nation, engineers watch thousands of bridges that remain open, yet are far from their best condition. "Structurally deficient" is not a death sentence, but it signals repairs can no longer wait. These 10 bridges handle massive traffic and are a serious concern nationwide today.
"Over the next few months, people will see the bridge flickering here and there as we really work to make sure it works perfectly, but also for the artists to fine-tune the beauty that he's making," said Ben Davis, founder and Chief Visionary Officer of Illuminate, the arts nonprofit behind the project.
Some seem to defy gravity, rise to unimaginable heights, and traverse difficult terrains. These iconic bridges are engineering marvels that offer tourists immense exploration opportunities. While they were built to serve as links between two points and enhance transportation, adventurers cannot help but admire the technical prowess involved in their construction and the scenery these bridges create. From being considered impossible to construct
Let's be honest: most of your daily commute involves dodging potholes, sitting behind someone going 10 under in the left lane, and wondering why your GPS insists on taking you through three construction zones. Luckily, every once in a while, the road gods smile upon us and deliver something special: bridges that actually make you want to slow down and savor the drive.
A Lake Tahoe landmark celebrated for how it encourages people to stop and lean over its railing to admire the water below reopened Tuesday after a full replacement that lasted several months. Fanny Bridge, a historic crossing over the Truckee River, is open again to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in Tahoe City. Part of Highway 89 at the southwestern edge of town, Fanny Bridge spans over Lake Tahoe's only outlet via West Lake Boulevard.
