Studded snow tires provide superior traction in winter but can be noisy and harmful to roads and health.
On the outside is a wind- and wear-resistant knitted nylon/spandex/lycra layer, and on the inside is a soft, moisture-wicking acrylic/polyester layer. Lastly, a waterproof and breathable Artex membrane is sandwiched between, keeping your hands dry no matter what. This creates a thin yet warm glove that's ideal for milder winters. I've worn these down to about 23°F in hail and winds hitting 50 miles per hour, and my hands were warm enough.
The reason we can gracefully glide on an ice-skating rink or clumsily slip on an icy sidewalk is that the surface of ice is coated by a thin watery layer. Scientists generally agree that this lubricating, liquidlike layer is what makes ice slippery. They disagree, though, about why the layer forms. Three main theories about the phenomenon have been debated over the past two centuries.
Pay attention to foot circulation Poor circulation doesn't just affect comfort. When feet remain cold for long periods, the body prioritizes keeping vital organs warm, which can contribute to feelings of fatigue and lowered resistance during winter. While cold feet don't directly cause illness, experts suggest that consistently struggling to stay warm may place additional strain on the immune system at a time when seasonal viruses are more prevalent.
the automation of heavy machinery enabled plants to operate continuously, increasing productivity and revenue. The downside was that any small hiccup was acutely felt, cascading through the production line. At first, it was assumed that inadequate lubrication of factory equipment was causing parts to seize up or break apart. And so, the Lubrication and Wear Group of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, along with the Iron
Wild Enduro Performance Line Michelin's Wild Enduro Performance Line features a double-ply 33 TPI casing, providing a more consistent rebound and ride feel. They use both compounds-Magi-X and Gum-X-together for rolling efficiency and cornering grip. The tires offer high puncture protection with a bead-to-bead shield helping to protect against sidewall punctures. Pinch flats are guarded against with Michelin's Pinch Protection technology, allowing for higher levels of reliability in varying terrain.
Sometimes I'm rather impressed by the ingenuity of those in the business of making scammy gadgets. Over the years, I've examined a wide range of products, from scam devices that claim to save you money on your power bill to a high-power USB charger filled with an unusual goo-like substance. A two-stage machine uses two types of augers to handle snow -- a main auger to break up and gather, and a secondary screw that throws snow to the side. These blowers are the most popular choice, as they can handle almost any driveway length and deep or heavy snow. They're also relatively affordable, with 24-inch models often costing under $1,000.
Almost certainly, your EV's range will drop when temperatures do. Some cars, like my own 2024 Kia EV6 pictured here, will adjust their range estimates to compensate for colder weather. I see, at most, around 220 to 240 miles of indicated range on a full charge when temperatures are between 0 and 30 degrees F. In temperate weather, the EV6 will deliver between 280 and 300 miles of range when the battery is at 100%.
Kia entered a prototype of its smallest electric model, the EV2, in the Norwegian Automotive Federation's (NAF) El Prix Winter Test Drive. It's an annual group winter range test designed to compare an EV's claimed range with its real-world performance when temperatures dip well below freezing. The EV2 isn't mentioned on the official results page (presumably because it's not a finished production car), but Kia points out that it performed better than all other cars that took part in the test.
Norway's El Prix winter range test is one of the most grueling experiments modern electric cars can face. Motor.no's editors take dozens of new EVs on a predetermined route to see how far they can make it in the freezing cold of the Scandinavian Peninsula. And this year was no different, with 25 new EVs taking on the challenge. It was an interesting edition, though, where none of the participants managed to set a new range record,
Motoring experts at LeaseLoco say there are ten essential items every driver should have on hand during wintry weather. Some, like de-icer and ice scrapers, are often found in most cars in winter, but the list also includes less obvious must-haves such as shovels and even pieces of old carpet.
