A socioeconomic duty on public bodies was included in 2010's Equality Act, but has never been enacted. Now Class Ceiling, a review from Manchester University, co-chaired by the former chief prosecutor Nazir Afzal, is calling for change. It wants class to be made a legally protected characteristic like race and sex (and several others), to address the class crisis in the arts not just in the north-west but across the UK.

Soap Opera, an ambitious video work by the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, is on view for the first time at the project space of Reykjavík's gallery i8, i8 Grandi. The piece is a recording of Santa Barbara: A Living Sculpture, a durational performance which explored immigration, class, war and power through the medium of daytime television, and took place at Moscow's GES-2 House of Culture between December 2021 and February 2022.

"Wokeness", like "cancel culture" and "critical race theory", is ill-defined and used as a vague catch-all for things the right does not like. In large part, the war on wokeness has been manufactured by the right's elite. In part, the war arises from grievances of the base. There are even some non-imaginary conflicts in this war -at least on the part of the Americans that can be seen as blue-collar workers.
