I wanted to be a great artist, not in the slang use of 'great,' but fantastic—reaching the soul of other people. This ambition drove Pat Steir throughout her life.

To call the oil paintings of Eyvind Earle "landscapes" is accurate but very sorely wanting. For more than seventy years, Earle turned his unique refracting eye on what he called the "stupendous infinity of nature," interpreting what he saw through a long lens shaped by a very particular kind of mythopoeia.

Maloof hand-carved a three-story spiral oak staircase. Other artists created stained-glass windows, copper doors and designer lighting. But the person who has been most involved in the house is Herb Hafif, the attorney, sculptor and art collector who personally split rocks for the stone walls and who has owned the property, through his philanthropic family foundation, since 1953.

The English-style home on Lyric Avenue was once owned by Disney and his wife, Lilian. Built in 1928, the house incorporates several Tudor features including intersecting gable roofs, multi-paned windows, a balcony and arched doorways.

The British artist Andy Goldsworthy moved to Penpont, a village in southwest Scotland, in 1986, when he was thirty. The area's initial appeal was twofold. Property was cheap, which meant that Goldsworthy and his wife at the time, Judith Gregson, could acquire an unrenovated stone building that had likely once stored grain. This structure could serve as a workspace and, for a while, as a rough-and-ready home.

Adults ages 18 and older are invited to welcome the season of renewal with a Jan. 17 watercolor session at the Milpitas Library inspired by fairytale mushrooms and spring landscapes. This guided workshop, part of this year's Silicon Valley Reads, is meant to help participants relax and create through watercolor art. The session is set for 10:30 a.m.-noon. The exhibit, which runs Jan.15-March 14 at the De Anza College museum, is presented in conjunction with Silicon Valley Reads and its 2026 theme, "Bridges to Belonging." Self, family and neighborhood portraits reflect South Bay Area faces and stories. Marie Cameron's "People in My Neighborhood" series grew from her desire to meet and celebrate essential workers and creatives in her hometown of Los Gatos. The portraits include her neighbor's caregiver, grocery store and café workers, an artist, an author and a small business owner.

The Long Beach Museum of Art is pleased to present Jux founder Robert Williams: Fearless Depictions, a survey exhibition featuring 57 paintings spanning from 2001 to the present, along with two large-scale sculptures by the iconic Southern California artist. Robert Williams ' epic, cartoon-inspired history paintings draw deeply from American vernacular culture and its visual slang, using concrete, relatable, and often absurd imagery to deliver sharp social commentary.

The Colombia-based designer and illustrator recently released a pair of hand-drawn digital landscapes that take a bird's-eye view of Yosemite National Park. Starting with a wide aerial shot of coniferous trees, the films then journey down a stream up to a waterfall, capturing the majestic scenery with grainy, tactile detail.

Artist Ayelet Gal-On does not just paint; she builds, layering oil, acrylic and plaster on canvas. Gal-On's signature subjects for "Taken by the Wind, Swept by the Light," her upcoming solo exhibition at Gallery 9 in Los Altos, are white dresses that appear to hang on a line, defying the stillness of the canvas. "I love the process of playing with color," says the artist.

Sand City sits just two miles from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, yet until this month, visitors couldn't spend the night in town. For decades, this half-square-mile town wedged between Costco and Highway 1 has been hiding in plain sight - a warehouse district turned open-air art gallery, where murals climb concrete walls and sculptors work in spaces that once stored industrial equipment.

Considering how this experience could be expressed artistically, he conceived "Domestic Light," which for two years used windowsill sensors in nearly 100 sites globally to record what he describes as "multispectral traces of home."
