I'm a Canadian startup founder. Y Combinator's initial decision to shut out Canadian startups was totally justifiable.

My cofounder and I officially founded West Tek Defense Corporation in August 2022. We were doing smart rifles for the military. It was complicated. (At one point, we were literally balancing redox equations for propellant in the ammo.) The physics background we both had helped a lot; essentially, everything we saw was something we'd encountered in a class or during personal research. We spent about three years on the entire process. Ultimately, we found out it wasn't going to work - mostly because of regulation.

How Rupon Anandanadarajah Helps SaaS Companies Outgrow Founder Intuition

Most successful SaaS companies begin with strong intuition. Founders understand the problem deeply. Early decisions are fast, informal, and often correct. The closeness between insight and action creates momentum that is hard to replicate later. As companies grow, that intuition becomes harder to rely on. Teams expand, customers diversify, and systems become more complex. Decisions that once felt obvious now feel risky. Many organisations respond by pushing harder on the same instincts that drove early success. Rupon Anandanadarajah has seen where that leads.

I quit Meta and left a comfortable salary to build a startup. Leaving wasn't easy, but now my AI receptionist answers millions of calls.

My clearest memory from middle school is pacing in my bedroom, phone in hand, repeating the word 'wake' again and again. I was testing a voice app I had written. If I said the phrase just right, the app would respond. If not, I would tweak the code and try again. I had just learned to code from YouTube. My apps were getting downloads, and I was addicted. I would run home from school, drop my backpack, and open the reviews before starting my homework. It was the first time I saw that code written alone in my bedroom could reach people I would never meet.
