The gathering, titled Safwat Al-Huffaz—The Elite of Quran Memorisers, has become a special collective way of observing Ramadan in Gaza.

Hundreds of Muslims gathered in New York's Times Square on Friday, Feb. 20, to break their fast and perform Taraweeh prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. The event, organized for the fifth year by social media personality Wayoflifesq, brought together men and women at the busy intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. As the call to prayer marked the end of the day's fast, participants broke their fast with prayers and chants before performing evening prayers in the square.

It was less than 24 hours after the news of a horrifying attack at a similar Menorah lighting in Sydney's Bondi Beach reverberated around the globe when Menlo Park's Jewish community gathered in Fremont Park to light the Menorah. Together, those assembled had the victims across the ocean in mind and prayed for them to find healing and comfort. The message of the Menorah has always been the resilience of light, and its message could not have been more relevant for a day which bore such difficult news.

More than 1,000 Jews, mostly in their 20s and 30s, from around the world united over the past week in New York City to share experiences, hear lectures, make connections and build bridges with relationships. They arrived, spending time in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, from places ranging from Montana to Miami; Brooklyn to Birmingham, Alabama; London to Taiwan; Australia to South America; Singapore, Estonia, France and all over the United States, finding similarities and solidarity in a post-Oct. 7 world.
