Molochnikov, who is 33, tall, and good-looking in the Jonathan Groff vein, greeted the audience the night I saw Seagull, personally thanking us for coming to see what he called 'my story.'

The new New Museum is many things: contemporary, perhaps, but also a science, history, anthropology, and many other museums in one. The Limited Space' series is built around the idea of a figure that has outgrown its space. Through exaggerated proportions and sculptural silhouettes, the body appears too large for the environment that continues to constrain it. Architectural elements and imposed barriers function as abstract limits, pressing against the figure and revealing tension through scale, weight, and posture rather than narrative.

On Franklin Street in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood, one non-commercial gallery fosters 'a small, stubbornly human space for friction.' Friction—the ubiquitous buzzword that captures the simultaneous delight and discomfort of doing things the slow way—is at the heart of artists Pap Souleye Fall and Char Jeré's current show at Subtitled NYC. It also reflects the overall spirit of this little exhibition space and of a burgeoning movement to reject our culture of optimization in favor of a bumpier, more intimate, less alienating experience.

Taking over the museum's transformed school building starting April 16, the cross-borough survey will celebrate MoMA PS1's 50th anniversary with a bevy of site-specific installations, new commissions, and rarely seen work by 53 artists and collectives living and working across New York City. Two years ago, the annual Under the Radar festival (which showcases international, experimental and multidisciplinary theater) was unexpectedly canceled by the Public Theater, its longtime presenter, due to financial issues. Now, an ambitious exhibition focusing on the French artist's later works, when he was at the height of his powers, will open at Basel's Fondation Beyeler in January.

Disembodied heads, eyes, and hands meet spindly trees, dragonflies, and vibrant blossoms in the folk-art inspired works of Michael McGrath. Based in Rhinebeck, New York, McGrath melds a variety of media-most pieces contain a mixture of graphite, ink, and oil and acrylic paints-into dynamic compositions suffuse with mystery. Recurring symbols and objects lend themself to a distinctive visual language that captures both the wondrous and puzzling.

But they also miss what makes his approach distinctive. Chang worked with objects that industrial culture designed to be identical: records pressed in millions of copies, portraits drawn according to strict house style, coins minted for perfect interchange. His interest lay in the precise moment when the promise of sameness begins to fail, when time and human handling leave marks that transform supposedly identical objects into singular things.
