On March 2, Apple unveiled the iPhone 17e, the successor to last year's budget-friendly model. The device finally includes MagSafe support, a feature conspicuously absent from its predecessor, along with an A19 chip and Ceramic Shield 2 for improved durability.
Sounds radical, doesn't it? The Touch Bar was such a waste of space on the MacBook Pro when it was first introduced exactly a decade ago in 2016. It shipped with a lot of potential but barely any real-world use, and Apple even considered swapping it out for a slot that housed the Apple Pencil back in 2021. Among other additions, it features new topic sections concerning quantum security, single sign-on (SSO), and satellite communications: Quantum Security: Another VGT, Apple deployed postquantum cryptographic protection (PQ3) in iMessage in iOS 17.4 and macOS 14.4. This protection against future quantum-based attacks has now been extended in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, and watchOS 26, including the introduction of CryptoKit, which developers can use to help protect the software they offer on the platforms.
Apple officially rolled out macOS 26.3 on Feb. 11, days after its beta went live. While their focus touched on security, bug fixes, and general optimization, reports from 9to5Mac suggest the update's core focus is much broader. The critical maintenance step improves the overall system, easing the future rollout of features such as the advanced M5 chip series, and potentially including changes required by the European Union for EU residents.
Apple is about to kick off a busy 2026 with a blitz of product releases over the next several weeks, according to Bloomberg. The iPhone 17e is coming in the next few weeks at $599 with the A19 chip from the iPhone 17, MagSafe charging, and Apple's newest in-house cellular chips. Updated iPads are also imminent, including a refreshed entry-level model with the A18 chip and iPad Airs with M4 processors.
