Prior to last week, I had never eaten at a Wawa. I knew of Wawa's food offerings, because Defector Media has a sizable, and vocal, Philadelphia contingent. The most vocal among that contingent was the late Dan McQuade. McQuade was so intensely Philadelphian that I thought of him any time I encountered anything related to that city, and I still do.
Hidden in a Philadelphia back alley, behind a clandestine door, lies a dark yet spirited cocktail lounge. Called the Ranstead Room, it's one of Philly's best-kept secrets. The speakeasy isn't easy to find, unless you happen to be behind El Rey Mexican restaurant on Ranstead Street. And even then, you'll have to locate a discreet black door with two R's emblazoned into it. But it's worth the quest, and it's one of my favorite lairs in the city.
A familiar face joined the "Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions" on Monday night. "Abbott Elementary" star Lisa Ann Walter got her chance to play after winning "Celebrity Jeopardy!" in 2024. Walter couldn't participate in the tournament last year due to the writer's strike and scheduling conflicts. But it was an incorrect question that may get her into some trouble with her adopted city of Philadelphia. The answer was: "In the 18th century, it was America's biggest port, trading for linen and tea; Later it traded for Steve Carlton & Roy Halladay."
Whether it's an ornament at the bottom of the box, or a nutcracker collecting dust in the attic, hand-me-down decorations can find a new home thanks to one local high school student and his mom. Grant Benedum and his mom, Christine, created a mission called, 'Giving Garland,' earlier this year. They have partnered with Norwood-Fontbonne Academy and Our Mother of Consolation Catholic Church in Chestnut Hill to collect decorations from students, parishioners, and their families.
The museum will merge its current location on 19 South 22nd Street with the adjacent Swedenborgian Church and Parish House on 2129 Chestnut Street. This plan has been in the works for awhile, with the Mütter having purchased the property for $9.3 million in 2023. So far, the museum has raised $27 million through an initial phase of fundraising "to support plans to create a cohesive campus," the release indicated.
