March 8 itself has been International Women's Day for just over a century, and although there are several versions of "why March 8?" the answers all lead back to early 20th-century socialists and communists. Soviet Russia in particular made a big thing of commemorating March 8 as the beginning of the first of the two revolutions that created their empire.

Portland-area festival Pickathon holds its 2026 edition on July 30-August 2 at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, OR. Festival passes and single-day tickets are on sale and they've just announced this year's lineup. The 2026 lineup features a selection of "legends" as headliners: Steve Earle, Marcos Valle, Built to Spill, Shakey Graves, Meridian Brothers, Alela Diane, Acid King, Mexican Institute of Sound, and Clinton Fearon.

The news is bleak, the nights are long. Yet somehow... the calendar is still stacked. January is when culture gets weird in the best way; this week, medieval manuscripts emerge from the vault, and camp horror and queer literature come out to play. A band called Ad Nauseam is dead set on keeping grunge alive in Portland, but no local venue will return their calls to play a show. Like the most iconic grunge acts, Ad Nauseam has deep PNW roots. They deliver sludgy, whining guitar licks and haunting, sandpapery vocals. They've even got an angsty tune called "Scab Pimple" for goodness sake. So why can't they land a gig? Well, it might be because all four band members are between the ages of 10 and 16.

He battled the often fatal disease with a unique combination of courage, fortitude and humor. After all, humor was just one of Ken's many remarkable gifts. He was without question the quickest and sharpest wit amongst all our artists. Ken always brought joy to every gig or occasion. No one came away from a conversation with him without a laugh or smile.

* Councilors Want City to Move Faster on Enforcement of New Detention Center Fee Portland City Councilors Angelita Morillo and Mitch Green are asking the mayor to expedite enforcement of a new detention center impact fee that targets landlords. The city code change makes it a violation to emit harmful chemical agents like tear gas, which pose environmental and health hazards.
