A fire broke out in a pier building on Pier 28 Tuesday morning, the second here in just over a year, leading to a subsequent traffic snarl in the area of Embarcadero and Bryant streets. The one-alarm fire on Pier 28, which produced smoke that billowed over the Bay, was reported by multiple 911 callers just before 10:30 am, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
Seven vehicles were involved in two pileups that occurred in a five-minute period Monday on the Golden Gate Bridge, the California Highway Patrol reported. The crashes happened at about 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes, CHP Officer Arthur Tellez said. One crash involved four vehicles and the other three. No injuries were reported. The crashes are under investigation. Police suspect unsafe speeds were involved in both incidents. The crashes blocked traffic lanes for about 30 minutes.
Maximo Macanas, a McKinleyville resident, was discovered by a local sport vessel on Tuesday, according to a Facebook post by the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office. He was pronounced dead by the county coroner's office on Tuesday afternoon.
