The first three months of 2026 were among the three safest first-three-month periods since records started being kept at the dawn of the Automobile Age, with only 42 fatalities from car crashes in New York City.

"I was hugging [my son], and then when I looked to my left, my daughter was just there, lying there. She was shot in the head. She was just bleeding. It was just too much."

Nolberto Jimbo-Niola, 52, died outside in the bitter cold this winter and was found on a Queens park bench with discharge papers from a local hospital. His death was one of more than two dozen from hypothermia so far this year in New York City, as residents faced a weekslong stretch of brutally cold temperatures.

A vehicle operated by the FDNY was traveling on Avenue S when it was struck by a van heading north on West 11th Street in the Gravesend section of the borough. As a result, the FDNY truck then collided with an Access-A-Ride van, which ended up hitting a Lexus SUV, according to the NYPD.

BOROUGH PARK - A fire inside a Borough Park building left six civilians and one firefighter injured on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The blaze started at 8:50 a.m. on the second floor of the building. FDNY said 21 units and 79 firefighters and EMS workers were at the scene. The fire was put out at 10:10 a.m. One person is in critical condition while five civilians and a firefighter sustained minor injuries.

A fire at the Stanley M. Isaacs Houses left three people injured after flames broke out on the eighth floor of one of the NYCHA towers on First Avenue between East 93rd and East 94th Streets, according to the New York City Fire Department. Firefighters said the blaze was brought under control in about 30 minutes and that crews searched the building to ensure no other occupants were trapped.

Fire marshals in Queens are investigating what sparked a three-alarm fire in a tire shop that extended to a nearby apartment building early on Saturday morning. Two firefighters wound up being hospitalized after being caught in a burst of smoke and flame during the fire that engulfed 1905 Flushing Ave. in Ridgewood just after 4 a.m. on Jan. 17. The first responding units from FDNY Battalion 28 reported heavy smoke pouring out of the tire shop and apartment building.
