A free artist-led festival in Peckham from May 8-10 features exhibitions, panel talks, and complimentary food and drinks.
Lachlan Turczan's practice sits in the space between physics, optics, and environmental art, as he works with lasers, water, mist, and custom-built lenses to produce sculptures made entirely from light.
Kamrooz Aram is everywhere this year, from Mumbai Art Week to the Whitney Biennial, and critic Aruna D'Souza is grateful. She pens a beautiful meditation on his work, reading his abstract paintings as not simply a denunciation of Western modernism nor a reassertion of Islamic visual motifs, but something else entirely - something gestural, exuberant, riotous, and incomparably his own.
The event was the following day: we had 250 tickets sold, we'd done so many rehearsals, and inside there were lighting rigs, performers' equipment, shop stock. It was truly heartbreaking. Refuweegee its name a combination of the words refugee and Weegee, local slang for Glaswegian has expanded exponentially over the decade into an operation that supports hundreds of asylum seekers and refugees in the city every day.
As cultural institutions continue to proliferate worldwide in this digital era, the museum itself appears increasingly in need of redefinition. Rather than offering a single model or solution, Architecture for Culture: Rethinking Museums, written by architectural historian and curator Béatrice Grenier, argues for a more contextual and plural understanding of what a museum can be: an institution shaped by its environment, its public, and the specific cultural questions it seeks to address.

Going out and demonstrating is really important. But if you don't feel comfortable demonstrating, you can volunteer for organizations, you can donate to organizations, you can sign petitions, you can call your senator. There's no excuse not to be involved on some level.
In 2014, Scottish artist Andy Scott made international headlines with the unveiling of his colossal dual horse-head sculptures, The Kelpies. Completed in late 2013, they are installed in the Helix park in Flakirk, Scotland, and each of the steel heads measures 98-feet high and weighs in at a whopping 300 tons. The works have become iconic in their own right, but also exemplary of Scott's practice, which takes focus on animal forms and employs the visually and thematically weighty materials of steel or bronze.

Euan Uglow, they say, is an artist's artist, and therein lies the problem. If you were approaching his painstaking canvases out of curiosity how to construct the figure, capture precise perspective, proportions I can see how their visible workings (complex little dashes and crosses and plumb lines and geometric grids) would prove revelatory. But lots of us come to art to be inspired, transported, to feel. And for all their technical prowess, Uglow's 70-odd regimented paintings at MK Gallery leave me cold.

CONDO WEEKEND BEGAN in the same way that all good British rom-coms, or Martin Amis novels, do: walking against the wind, en route to an oversize redbrick Victorian house in Earls Court, a spot that my press invitation had unabashedly advertised as being located in Notting Hill, but is an easy two tube stops away. This was the "standing" dinner to celebrate Arash Nassiri's "A Bug's Life," newly open at Chisenhale Gallery, in a renowned collector's home.
