Super Bowl Sunday is almost here! And whether you're planning to stay glued to each play of the Big Game, tune in for the halftime show and big-budget, best-in-advertising commercials, or just enjoy gathering with friends and family - you'll need to stay fed during the upcoming extravaganza at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. To help, we've asked some of our favorite Bay Area chefs and culinary leaders to share their Super Bowl recipes.
On Super Bowl Sunday, a huge tailgate party featuring celebrity chefs will take place just a 15-minute walk away from Levi's Stadium. That's right: You have 15 minutes to walk off all the calories delivered in tasty-treat form by the likes of Aaron Sanchez (Chopped), Kelsey Murphy (MasterChef) and Shota Nakajima (Top Chef). It's called the Players Tailgate, and its organizers at the Indianapolis-based Bullseye Event Group an NFL-franchise partner that specializes in VIP tailgates are billing it as the culinary Super Bowl before the Super Bowl.
They describe their pies as taking inspiration from elements of Neapolitan and New York pizzas, reframed in the gastronomic window of Northern California. What's that mean? Well, the dough is slow-fermented, and the pizzas are baked longer and at lower temperatures than usual. Crafted with organic grains from Central Milling and a poolish pre-ferment, the dough undergoes multiple days of cold fermentation prior to being stretched and topped.
The Flour + Water Pizza Shop is opening Jan. 22 at 269 24th St. on the bottom level of the Lark Uptown apartments, just north of Lake Merritt. It's an offshoot of the popular Italian bistro Flour + Water in San Francisco's Mission District - which the Michelin Guide recognizes for its "evergreen appeal" - and will be the restaurant's third Bay Area pizza shop (and first in the East Bay).
