AI has evolved from experimentation to a focus on proven strategies and increased productivity in retail.
The new tracker features a simplified progress bar that shows just four stages of pizza creation. The new design was rolled out to all platforms, and there's also new Lock Screen widgets for iOS that bring the pizza chain's most famous tech feature to the Liquid Glass age.
Since May 2025, we have been updating a significant proportion of both colleague operated and self-service checkouts across all of our stores to make them more efficient, with the refresh due to complete very soon. The new technology will ensure we can continue to offer our customers excellent levels of service, now and into the future.
Over 150,000 reports have been submitted to the site, Thursday. Downdetector's map shows the partial outage impacting major US cities, including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, and Seattle. The total number of reports in the analysis period is 159,997, with a spike of more than 21,000 reports at one point early Thursday afternoon.
Whole Foods shelves sit empty after a data breach shut down its wholesale distributor. Meat packers working for JBS Foods are paralyzed as an $11 million ransomware attack takes out their processing facilities. Some 2.2 million workers at Stop & Shop and Hannaford have their personal data exposed as the result of a cyberattack on parent company Ahold Delhaize USA. These scenarios, straight from a William Gibson novel, are becoming increasingly common in supply chains across the world.
In early tests with a review unit of Bee, we found the device itself was easy to use. It's just a press of a button to turn recording on or off. In the app, you can configure whether a double press bookmarks a section of the conversation, processes the current conversation, or both, and you can set whether a press and hold gesture lets you leave a voice note or chat with the AI assistant.
The reason is a lack of user research to understand how people think and act when shopping, and how they navigate their way through the experience to get it done. It's the user experience concept of a mental model, if you want to get fancy, or the application of a system matching the real-world heuristic they teach you about in college.
Alphabet ( NASDAQ:GOOGL) has been the best of the Magnificent Seven for a reason. Whether we're talking about the strength of its latest Gemini launch or all the new ways where Google could put its AI to work, it's hard to be bearish about the firm, especially as investors look far beyond just search to the potential markets where Alphabet could disrupt.
To use the new chatbot, users search for a grocery store in the Uber Eats app and tap the purple Cart Assistant icon on the store's page to begin shopping. Customers can enter a list or upload an image of one, and Cart Assistant will automatically add the necessary items to their basket. This includes photos of handwritten lists or screenshots of recipes and their ingredients. Users can then customize the basket by swapping items for preferred brands or adding more products from the store.
Would you like extra fries? Would you like to go large? Not all people, but I think there's definitely a large proportion of people who may feel judged in those instances, and may say no. Plus, there's really good product imagery on the terminals, so you can see the product, you can see what's in it, you can see all the other products linked to it as well. So there's that.
Surveys suggest customers want to use AI for shopping and to see AI tools from retailers. In a CI&T survey conducted in 2025, 58% of 1,040 U.S. consumers said retailers should use AI to improve the shopping experience, and almost 75% said they were already using AI tools at least occasionally in their path to purchase. In a separate survey from Gartner last March, 56% of millennials said they would be willing to let AI handle or assist with some of their shopping tasks.
Perusing the grocery aisle in the Westside Market on 23rd Street in Manhattan, you might not even notice the screens. They look just like paper price labels and, alongside a bar code, use a handwriting-style font we've come to associate with a certain merchant folksiness. They're not particularly bright or showy. The only clues that they're not ordinary sticky shelf labels are a barely distinguishable light bulb and, on some, a small QR code.
That's a problem. Without a doubt, a great website and top-level marketing will help generate new sales, but it's the delivery experience that warrants future ones. This is because today's consumer not only has options for where they'll buy but also a high set of expectations. What's more, they remember the way a product arrives at their doorstep more than how it was sold.
Folks have griped on Reddit that their locations do not offer self-checkout options (though many report that their locations haven't undergone any recent remodels). Others have shared frustration with Publix's existing self-checkout system, which they claim only offers a small bagging area, and when they move their full bags off the scale, it flags the employee - effectively wasting both the customer's and the employee's time.
To illustrate just how AI is starting to reshape the shopping experience, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and incoming Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner announced a partnership resulting in shoppers now able to shop Walmart and Sam's Club products directly on Gemini, Google AI chatbot. In addition, Google also introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an AI commerce framework aimed at becoming an industry standard that allows AI agents to interact directly with retailers' commerce systems.
Amazon said it is discontinuing Amazon One, its palm-authentication service, across all retail businesses. Users will be able to continue to use Amazon One at supported retail locations until June 3, though some locations may phase the services out before this date. The services will remain available to patients for check-in at healthcare locations until further notice. Amazon One enables users to use their palms for actions such as paying at a store, presenting loyalty cards, and entering sports venues.
The American Customer Satisfaction Survey rates hundreds of companies in dozens of categories. In its latest study, the Retail and Consumer Shipping Study 2026, Amazon.com Inc. ( NASDAQ: AMZN) topped the Online Retailer category. In all the studies, regardless of category, companies receive ratings of zero to 100. This latest study is based on 31,293 completed surveys. Customers were chosen at random and contacted via email between January and December 2025.
If checkout happens inside AI conversations, retailers risk losing direct customer relationships - while platforms like Microsoft gain leverage. Driving the news: Microsoft unveiled new agentic AI tools for retailers at the NRF 2026 retail conference, including Copilot Checkout, which lets shoppers complete purchases inside Copilot without being redirected to a retailer's website. The checkout feature is live in the U.S. with Shopify, PayPal, Stripe and Etsy integrations.
