A dry rub using classic pastrami seasonings enhances the flavor of prime rib roast.
Social media was full of posts revealing shock and horror as one of the area's biggest names in hot dogs quickly closed with no warning. Some who dismissed the news as a poorly crafted April Fools prank soon came to realize that this was no joke after seeing the empty kitchen and counter.
Gianmarco's Restaurant is a Birmingham staple founded by a father-and-sons trio who have brought generations of Italian family recipes to the city for nearly 20 years. The upscale yet welcoming spot is known for handmade pastas, fresh seafood, and signature dishes, such as veal Parmesan and house-made gnocchi, all served in an intimate, old-world setting.
The list of nominees is dominated by a new class of ambitious DC restaurants serving cuisines from Africa and the African diaspora in the Caribbean, including Elmina, Isla, and Marcus DC.
The first clue could be if the server brings your check without it being requested. That's certainly a sign that the staff considers your meal done and isn't expecting (or perhaps wanting) you to order anything else.
Last month, I found myself sitting in what looked like the world's most boring strip mall restaurant. Beige walls, no signage except for a tiny brass plaque, and a parking lot filled with understated luxury cars. I'd been invited by a source who'd built three successful companies before turning forty. This was about something else entirely.
When you hear that a restaurant is hard to get into, it signals that there must be something worthy of drawing a crowd - and with all of the restaurants on this list, that is certainly the case. Whether it's food so creative you just can't find it anywhere else, cocktails and wine lists crafted to impress, stellar service, or celebrity sightings, these locations are hard to get a table at for a reason.
A little more than a year ago, after running a successful pop-up called Ha's Đặc Biệt, the chefs Sadie Mae Burns and Anthony Ha opened Ha's Snack Bar, an itsy-bitsy restaurant on the Lower East Side. The Snack Bar, like the pop-up, served Vietnamese-inspired dishes that were clever, cheffy (and more than a bit French-inflected), and utterly cool without any sort of hauteur.
New York City is many things: A place to meander through museums and parks, to sit enthralled in a dark off-Broadway black box theater, to live in a studio with a bathroom in the kitchen and happily pay an absurd amount for it. It should be no surprise that for those of us at Bon Appétit who call the city home, it's all about the food.
